Role Description/Purpose

As a Teacher of English, you will play a key role in maintaining the integrity and reputation of the British Council by ensuring that all classes are delivered to the highest standards of teaching excellence, customer service, safeguarding, security, and administration. You will also contribute to promoting a positive image of the British Council by providing consistently high‑quality teaching in the classroom.
Role Accountabilities
As a Teacher of English with the British Council, you will play a key role in maintaining the organisation’s integrity and reputation by ensuring that all classes are delivered to the highest standards of teaching excellence, customer service, security, safeguarding and administration. You will also contribute to promoting a positive image of the British Council by consistently providing high‑quality teaching in the classroom.
In this role, you will plan, prepare and deliver high‑quality English language lessons that respond to the needs of diverse learner groups, taking into account individual learning styles and modes of learning. You will ensure that your teaching aligns with British Council Global Teaching Standards and meets both organisational expectations and learner goals. Throughout the course, you will monitor student progress, provide regular feedback, and actively encourage learner autonomy and continued development.
You will support local marketing and promotional activities and contribute to excellent customer service through clear communication and the effective sharing of information with students. The role also requires the completion of teaching‑related administrative tasks to agreed standards, while upholding professional responsibilities and embodying the British Council’s values and behaviours. Building and maintaining positive relationships with students and colleagues will be an essential part of your work.
You will ensure that all guidelines related to Safeguarding, Data Protection, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Special Educational Needs and Disability, and Health and Safety are consistently applied and upheld in your practice.
Qualifications & Experience
Essentials
- Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or equivalent certification.
- Prior teaching experience with young learners and adult groups.
- Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C1 level.
Important Information:
- Location: Algiers (on-site).
- Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided
- Contract type: Fixed‑term, 6 months, with the possibility of renewal.
- Requirements of services provided: This service agreement is delivered primarily under a service provider contract, which means that most teaching hours are scheduled in line with customer demand. As a result, a significant proportion of service delivered may take place during evenings and weekends. Agreed in principle and in writing before the start of each period of service delivery. Service providers may also be required to deliver classes across different sites or off-site locations. The payment is offered on an hourly paid basis and does not guarantee fixed weekly hours. Service providers must ensure there are no restrictions on their right to work and deliver services under this Service Agreement.
