Role Description/Purpose
The Bogotá Teaching Centre delivers a wide range of English language courses to adults and young learners. Teaching takes place at our main centre in Bogotá, in partner institutions across the city, and in a variety of public and private institutions. We have ambitious growth plans for the coming years and aim to expand our reach into new areas of the city through partnerships, offering programmes for learners of all age groups.
In addition to teaching, the British Council is responsible for delivering a diverse UK examinations portfolio across Colombia. This includes major international exams such as IELTS and Aptis, as well as a range of private language examinations. These examinations are delivered to both individual and organisational customers, with operations spanning the public and private sectors.
The purpose of this role is to provide learners with a rewarding, engaging, and stimulating experience in learning English. The role holder will promote and ensure high-quality teaching and effective learning, while supporting the wider objectives of the British Council and contributing to its cultural relations mission. Successful candidates will play an important part in delivering excellence in education and strengthening the British Council’s impact across Colombia.
Role Accountabilities
We are seeking passionate and dedicated teachers to support our global English strategy. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality English language teaching tailored to diverse learning needs and styles. You will monitor student progress, provide regular feedback, and actively promote learner autonomy to enhance their development. Your contributions will drive the continuous improvement of courses, materials, and related services, ensuring excellence in teaching and learning.
With a commitment to maintaining academic quality and meeting organisational expectations, you will integrate technology into lessons where needed and efficiently manage administrative responsibilities. Your work will foster meaningful relationships, enriching students' understanding of contemporary UK culture. Additionally, you will collaborate with colleagues, provide class cover, and engage in professional development to uphold best practices in English language teaching.
Beyond the classroom, you will support marketing initiatives, contribute to excellent customer service, and uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and health and safety standards. Be part of a team that inspires learners and drives positive change.
Qualifications & Experience
Essentials
- Undergraduate or University degree.
- Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification from Trinity College.
- A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults. You should have experience in teaching two or more of the following age groups:
- Very young learners <4 (400+ hours)
- Young learners aged 4 to 7 (400+ hours)
- Young learners aged 8 to 12 (400+ hours)
- Young learners aged 13 to 17 (400+hours)
- Adults aged 18+ (800+ hours)
- Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level or IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module.
Desirables
- Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
- Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC) or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL).
- Bachelor of Education Degree Programme in Primary Education or Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
- Experience teaching myClass, International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Business English, Very Young Learners and Primary.
Important Information
- Location: Bogotá.
- Hourly Rate: CELTA qualified 71,378 COP. DELTA qualified 78,510 COP.
- Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided
- Contract type: Fixed-Term.
- Working Hours: Classes are offered from 07.00 a.m. to 9.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 08.00 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. on Saturdays.This role may require mornings and/or evenings, and Saturday work. Every effort is made to reduce split shifts.

- Annual leave: 15 days and Colombian national days. Accrued monthly based on time worked and therefore prorated.
