What's it like to work at the British Council as a Teacher?

Teacher's Success Story

Role Overview /Purpose:

The British Council in Vietnam delivers high‑quality English language teaching to a wide range of learners in diverse contexts. We currently offer face‑to‑face Adult and Young Learner courses at our teaching centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as teaching in partner schools where we deliver the school’s own English language syllabus. Our work in schools extends to other provinces, with plans to expand further through new initiatives.

Most of our teaching is to Young Learners aged between 3 and 17 years old, and your experience and availability will influence the setting in which you are assigned. Teaching hours vary depending on assignments and will be confirmed during the onboarding stage.

As a Teacher of English, you will provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience. You will promote and ensure high‑quality teaching and effective learning of English while supporting the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission.

Role Accountabilities:

In this role, you will deliver high‑quality English language learning experiences across a range of delivery modes, including teaching centres and wider teaching activity. You will place student experience and customer satisfaction at the centre of your work, ensuring that learners receive engaging, effective and well‑supported learning opportunities.

You will plan, prepare and deliver teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups, taking into account individual learning needs and varied modes of learning. All teaching will align with British Council Global Teaching Standards, as well as organisational and learner expectations. You will monitor learner progress closely and provide regular, constructive feedback to support achievement, independence and learner autonomy.

Beyond the classroom, you will contribute actively to collaborative teaching practices, course development and the continuous enhancement of our English language services. You will participate fully in teaching centre activities and wider teaching delivery operations, attend relevant staff meetings and engage with the teaching community and its activities.

You will support the development, evaluation and improvement of courses, materials and related services by working closely with colleagues as part of a wider teaching team. You will also support local marketing and promotional activities and assist teaching centre teams in delivering excellent customer service through clear communication and effective dissemination of information to students.

As part of your role, you will complete teaching‑related administrative tasks to required standards and uphold professional responsibilities, values and behaviours. You will take ownership of your professional development through ongoing learning and performance engagement, maintaining high standards while working both independently and collaboratively, and helping to ensure the British Council remains at the forefront of best practice in English Language Teaching.

You will maintain positive and professional relationships with students, customers, colleagues and partners, and contribute to productive engagement with external stakeholders. You will support the British Council’s cultural relations role by helping learners develop an understanding of the UK and its values, and by encouraging intercultural interaction both in and beyond the classroom.

You will ensure that all relevant guidelines and policies are applied and upheld, including those relating to safeguarding, data protection, equality, diversity and inclusion, special educational needs and disability, and health and safety.
