Role Purpose
Join our dedicated team in the British Council School in Madrid as a Secondary Teacher of English, inspiring and guiding students across Key Stage 3, 4 (English National Curriculum) and Key Stage 5 (Bilingual Baccalaureate - BiBac®). We are committed to delivering the highest standards of teaching and learning while providing exceptional pastoral care, ensuring that every student reaches their full academic potential and grows as a global citizen.
In this role, you will not only teach but also develop the subject area beyond the academic curriculum, seeking innovative ways to offer students practical experiences that enhance their understanding and engagement. As a form tutor, you will be an essential point of support for a group of students, fostering strong communication with parents, students, and subject teachers to provide outstanding pastoral care and academic guidance.

Role Accountabilities
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Secondary Teacher of English to join our team, committed to setting high expectations that inspire, motivate, and challenge pupils. The ideal candidate will promote excellent progress and outcomes, demonstrating strong subject knowledge and a deep understanding of the curriculum.
Effective lesson planning and delivery are essential, ensuring structured and engaging sessions that respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils. The role requires adaptability in teaching approaches, enabling each student to achieve their potential through accurate and productive assessment strategies.
A safe and supportive learning environment is at the heart of what we do, and effective behaviour management is a key responsibility. Beyond classroom teaching, wider professional duties contribute to the holistic development of students and the school community.

Qualifications & Experience
Essentials
- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent teaching certification; Qualified Teacher Status or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s Degree in the subject applied for.
- Recently completed teacher training programme in the specific phase applied to, demonstrating relevant experience in a UK, International or Bilingual School.
- Recent, relevant, professional development in Teaching and Learning.
- Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level.
Desirables
- A minimum of 2 years recent and relevant teaching experience within the last 5 years in the Secondary phase in a UK, International or Bilingual School.
- English as a Foreign Language (EFL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching experience with children.
- Recent experience in delivery of English National Curriculum.
- KS3, KS4 and KS5 experience.
Important Information:
- Location: Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid).
- Salary: €1,802.18 - €2,823.93 per month (Based on qualification and experience). Paid 15 times per annum (extra payments in June, September and December).
- Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Candidates are expected to have researched whether they have the right to live and work in Spain. The British Council School of Madrid welcomes international candidates and will support successful applicants in obtaining a work visa.
- Contract type: Indefinite.
- Contracted hours: 34 hours per week.
