Role Description/Purpose

The British Council’s English Language Centre in Paris opened in 1998, originally as a small operation offering classes to young learners. Today, British Council Paris Teaching operates from its prestigious and centrally located Invalides premises, as well as across ten off-site locations in the Île-de-France region. The centre delivers a broad portfolio of English language courses, teaching approximately 4,800 young learners aged 3 to 18 during the academic year and a further 2,000 learners through holiday courses. The adult programme, launched in 2007, now offers lessons for Adult learners, enabling adults to book individual lessons according to their preferences, with over 1,000 adult learners engaged at any one time. The operation continues to grow, with ambitions to further expand off-site delivery.
We are seeking a part-time English teacher to deliver high-quality teaching and ensure effective learning for students across a range of age groups. The role also contributes to the wider aims of the British Council and supports its cultural relations mission through excellence in English language education.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of age groups and course types across any of the British Council’s delivery locations in Paris and the surrounding region. The role involves working collaboratively within a large, experienced, and highly successful team of teachers and academic staff, contributing to a dynamic and expanding teaching operation.
 
Role Accountabilities

This role supports the British Council’s global English strategy by delivering English language teaching to the highest professional standards, enhancing the organisation’s reputation as a world authority in English Language Teaching, and actively engaging in continuous professional development through the sharing of best practices. The post holder is responsible for ensuring that teaching meets learners’ needs and expectations, aligns with British Council Teaching Quality standards, and reflects wider organisational goals. Maintaining positive and professional relationships with students, customers, and colleagues is essential, as is contributing to the teaching centre’s activities and supporting British Council plans and initiatives.

The British Council believes that all children have potential and that every child matters, everywhere in the world. The successful candidate will plan, prepare, and deliver between six and twelve hours per week of high-quality English language teaching across the Île-de-France region, meeting the needs of diverse customer groups and taking into account individual learning styles. They will monitor student progress, provide regular feedback to support performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy. Working collaboratively as part of the teaching team, the teacher will contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of courses, teaching materials, and related services to ensure they continue to meet learners’ needs.

The role also involves completing all teaching-related administrative tasks to required standards and actively engaging in professional development and performance management processes to ensure excellence in teaching and learning. By maintaining high professional standards, the post holder will help ensure the British Council remains at the forefront of best practice in English Language Teaching. The teacher will contribute to building lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK culture, as well as supporting local marketing and promotional activities and assisting the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service.

In addition, the post holder is required to complete and keep up to date all mandatory British Council training and to apply and uphold safeguarding policies and guidelines, including those related to child protection, equal opportunity and diversity, and health and safety, in line with organisational standards and policies.

 

Qualifications & Experience  
Essentials 

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (Cambridge CELTA) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Trinity TESOL) certification.
  • A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults. Experience in teaching two or more age groups specific to the centre:
    • Early Years aged 2 to 5 (400+).
    • Primary aged 6 to 10 (400+ hours).
    • Lower Secondary aged 11 to 14 (800+ hours).
    • Upper Secondary aged 15 to 17 (800+ hours).
    • Adults General English 18+ (800+ hours).
    • Cambridge suite and IELTS exam preparation courses
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level.

Desirables

  • Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
  • Bachelor of Education Degree Programme in Primary Education or Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).
  • Young Learner extension courses, including qualifications such as TYLEC, CELTYL, or NILE.
  • Teaching Experience with Young Learners across:
    • Early years (age 2 - 5) (800+ hours).
    • Primary (age 6 – 10) (800 hours).
    • Secondary (age 11 – 17) (1900+ hours).

 

Important Information:

  • To ensure a consistent evaluation process, candidates are required to upload their CV in English. 
  • Start date: 1 September 2026 (next academic year). 
  • Location: Paris Metropolitan Area. Teachers may be expected to work in more than one British Council centre. They are also likely to work in more than one location, e.g. British Council centre and a partner institution.
  • Monthly Gross Salary: The monthly gross salary typically ranges from approximately €580 to €1,000, depending on the number of scheduled teaching hours. Final compensation and teacher level will be determined based on qualifications and relevant experience.
  • Contracted hours per week: Part time, between 6 and 10 teaching hours. There is a possibility of additional hours depending on operational needs. 
  • Working Hours: The majority of teaching hours will be scheduled on Saturdays between 9:00 and 17:00; therefore, availability during this time is essential. Additional teaching opportunities may be available on Wednesdays throughout the day and/or on weekday evenings.
  • Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided
  • Contract type: Indefinite. 
  • Annual Leave: Paid annual leave is accrued throughout the year in accordance with British Council policies and standards, in addition to public holidays as stipulated under French law.
  • Please note: This position involves teaching learners aged 3 to 18. Applicants should have relevant experience and a genuine interest in working with children and teenagers.
