Role Description/Purpose
The British Council Spain operates a network of teaching centres across the country, delivering high-quality English language teaching to approximately 30,000 students each year. In addition to our teaching centres, we operate the British Council's only school in Madrid, manage a significant exams operation, support English language learning nationwide, and deliver impactful programmes in arts, education, and society.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds, with the majority being young learners in early years, primary, and secondary education, alongside a substantial adult learner population. Role Accountabilities
Join the British Council in Spain and become part of a team dedicated to delivering exceptional English language teaching to learners of all ages. As a Teacher of English, you will play a key role in supporting the British Council’s global English strategy by delivering high-quality teaching, enhancing our reputation as a world leader in English Language Teaching, and contributing to a culture of continuous professional development and best practice sharing.
In this role, you will plan, prepare, and deliver engaging English language lessons that meet the needs of a wide range of learners. You will adapt teaching materials and methodologies to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that lessons are relevant, effective, and learner-centred. You will make full use of British Council resources to help students achieve their learning goals and maximise their progress.
A key aspect of the role is monitoring and assessing learner performance, providing regular and constructive feedback both in writing and face-to-face. You will support students throughout their learning journey, encourage learner autonomy through appropriate homework and self-study activities, and engage with parents and students through individual meetings when required.
As a valued member of the teaching team, you will contribute to the ongoing development and success of the Teaching Centre. You will collaborate closely with colleagues, maintain positive relationships with learners and customers, and support the wider objectives and activities of the British Council. You will also complete teaching-related administrative tasks accurately and on time, including class registers, course records, and other operational duties.
The role requires a strong commitment to professional development. You will actively participate in continuous professional development activities to maintain high standards of teaching and learning and to ensure that your practice reflects current developments in the field of English Language Teaching. You will also contribute to building meaningful cultural connections by helping students develop a greater understanding of contemporary UK culture and society.
In addition to classroom teaching, you will support the wider teaching operation through tutorials and by guiding learners and parents towards the most appropriate courses and progression pathways. You will be committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment, ensuring that safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion, and health and safety policies are consistently applied and upheld.

Qualifications & Experience
Essentials
- University degree.
- Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (Cambridge CELTA) or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Trinity TESOL) certification.
- A minimum of 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA/Trinity cert TESOL experience gained from teaching a variety of age groups and levels from young learners through to adults.
- Proficiency in English equivalent to a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) C2 level.
Desirables
- Recognised diploma in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) i.e. Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA).
Important Information:
- Start date: 30 September 2026 (next academic year).
- To ensure a consistent evaluation process, candidates are required to upload their CV in English.
- Location: Valencia. Teachers may be expected to work in more than one British Council centre. They are also likely to work in more than one location, e.g. British Council centre and a partner institution.
- Contracted hours per week: This role is offered on a part-time basis, with a contractual commitment of 6 hours per week. There may be opportunities to work additional hours, subject to operational requirements and business needs.
- Monthly gross salary: The monthly gross salary for Teachers Level 1 ranges from approximately €238,50 for a 3-hour weekly contract to €1.080 a 15-hour weekly contract. Final compensation and teacher level is determined based on qualifications and experience.
- Proof of Identity & Right to Work: Locally Recruited - Applications are welcomed from candidates currently in this location with a natural right to work. Applications are also welcomed from candidates currently based in other British Council country offices. However, please note candidates must have a natural right to work in the country, on a permanent basis, as immigration clearance and/or on-going visa support is not provided by the British Council for this role. Relocation support is also not provided
- Contract type: Indefinite.
- Annual leave: 45 working days per year of work, in accordance with British Council policies and standards.
- Please note: This position involves teaching Early Years and Primary groups, with the possibility of secondary or occasional adult classes. Applicants should have relevant experience working with children and a genuine interest in supporting young learners’ development.
